2010 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS
Indicators show just how difficult the economy has
been in regard to the creation of business startups,
branch developments and in employment numbers.
The numbers say it all. Nationwide, across all 16 industries we cover in-depth in our editorial cover- age throughout the year, new business startup and
branch developments were in decline. We asked BiMiner
of Camp Hill, Pa., to use its methodology to determine
where the stars were shining brightly in regard to business investment.
Millions of points of data have been crunched and the
foremost states in these 16 industry sectors have been
revealed.
The industry sectors measured by BizMiner for 2010
include: Aerospace, Agribusiness/Food Processing;
Alternative Energy; Automotive OEMs; Automotive
Suppliers; Back Office-FIRE; Biosciences; Health Services;
High-tech Manufacturing; Industrial Manufacturing;
Logistics; Medical Device Manufacturers; Pharmaceutical;
Plastics; Real Estate Industry (Commercial), and
Warehouse/Distribution.
Each category highlights the leading states based on
data compiled for startups, branch activities and employment concentration numbers. All indicators are based on
real-time data from the first quarter 2008 to the first
quarter 2009.
Startup activity indicators illustrate firms that reported
one year or less of operation. Branches are excluded from
this measure. In regard to branch indicators, they are
secondary (non-headquarters) facilities of multi-site
firms. And employment concentration indicators compare
total industry employment levels among the states.
